The National Highway Company has submitted to the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic a request for the issuance of a certificate of strategic investment for the construction of the D4 highway in the Bratislava-Rača - Bratislava-Záhorská Bystrica section.
The project is included in the annexe to the Act on Strategic Investments. It is a transport infrastructure included in the comprehensive trans-European transport network on the territory of the Slovak Republic.
The highway is located in the Bratislava region, in the districts of Bratislava, Malacky and Pezinok. The investment project includes constructing a new section of the highway (including the Karpaty Tunnel through the Malé Karpaty mountain), which will improve the traffic flow, safety, and the environment.

The total length of the proposed investment is 12.41 km (of which 11.76 km is the tunnel). The planned construction start date is the 4th quarter of 2029 and the planned construction completion date is the 2nd quarter of 2036. According to Yimba.sk the expected cost of the construction may reach €1.7 billion, the financing strategy is not yet known.
